The Tropic Hunt is a community event that comes as close to being "indescribable" as anything I know. It's a puzzle, a contest, a treasure hunt. It is also performance art and a community-wide team-building exercise. Imagination is the theme--the creators use their twisted minds to devise impossibly convoluted and complicated clues, and the participants stretch their imaginations to conceive the solutions. The operative question, trying to solve the puzzle: "WHAT were they thinking?!"

The "Tropic Hunt" became the "Herald Hunt" after the demise of Tropic. It was not improved by the addition of alliteration, but the experience is still unique. Better some years than others, but always zany and unpredictable.

This letter to the editor does a good job of portraying the spirit of the Hunt.

This Hunt team from 1986 created a website to commemorate their experience. One member of the team is a mental health professional; that surely came in handy for them.

As you can imagine, The Hunt has developed a devoted group of followers. Here's a website devoted to all things Hunt-related.
