For the second year in a row, The Miami Herald's Tropic magazine has won higher honors for design and editorial content than any other newspaper magazine at the annual convention of American Sunday magazine editors.

Competing against 40 other Sunday magazines, Tropic won four awards, including best black and white layout for a Nov. 30, 1986, photo essay on Miami by photographer Mary Ellen Mark. Tropic also finished second in three other categories:

* Color layout, for a Dec. 28, 1986, issue turning the magazine into a 1987 calendar.

* Feature story, for "An American Tragedy," Meg Laughlin's Feb. 1, 1987, account of the death of a Haitian refugee.

* Essay, for "Why I Work at the Drugstore," a Nov. 16, 1986, article by T.M. Shine.
